Hotel Rating Definitions

In India, star hotels are categorized into 6 different types - one star hotel, two star hotel, three star hotel, four star hotel, five star hotel, and five star deluxe hotel.

The Hotel & Restaurant Approval & Classification Committee (HRACC), Hotels & Restaurants Division, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, does the inspection and assessment of hotels based on the facilities and services provided by them and assigns stars to hotels accordingly.

HotelKhoj's hotel database displays star category hotels according to government ratings; however, HotelKhoj and its affiliates do not guarantee service levels & amenities at these hotels to be consistent.


One Star
Generally, one star hotels are small, often 2 to 4 storied. These hotels are typically located close to good attractions, major intersections, and public transport junctions. Facilities provided are basic, but clean. Furnishing is also fundamental in nature. One star hotels are required to have at least one dining room serving all meals, but many hotels may not have on-site restaurants. However, they are often within walking distance to some fine, inexpensive dining. In-room internet connection, business center, conference facility, swimming pool, etc are not present. These hotels are requird to have all rooms with attached bathrooms and 24 hours avilability of hot and cold running water; however, these facilities may not be present at some hotels. Public access may be restricted during nights.

Two Star
Hotels in this category provide good-quality facilities. The hotels are typically small to medium in size and are located near moderately priced attractions. The facilities generally include telephones & TVs in the bedroom. Some hotels offer limited dining service; however, room service & bellhop service is, often, not available.
In-room internet connection, business center, conference facility, swimming pool, etc are often not present. Two hotels are requird to have all rooms with attached bathrooms and 24 hours avilability of hot and cold running water; however, these may not be present at some hotels.

Three Star
Typically, these hotels have
well-serviced accommodations & spacious, decorated lobbies. Bellhop service is, sometimes, not available. They are often located near major roads or business areas giving easy access to shopping & moderately priced attractions. The hotels usually feature restaurants that offer breakfast, lunch, & dinner. Valet parking, gym, & swimming pools are often present. Room service is available 24 hours a day. In-room internet connection, business center, conference facility, swimming pool, etc are often present.

Four Star
Four star hotels are typically big having attractive reception areas, spacious lobbies, professional front-office service, & bellhop service. These hotels are often located near other hotels of the same category and are usually close to some good shopping, dining, & several other attractions. The service level is first class. Rooms are well furnished. Restaurants & coffee shop are usually open for most hours. Room service is available for 24 hours. Valet parking is also usually available. Concierge services, gym, in-room internet connection, business center, & one or more swimming pools are present.

Five Star & Five Star Deluxe
The hotels in this category offer the best-in-class accommodations having optimum facilities & services. The five-star properties offer a greater degree of personalized service. The hotel location varies from the very special locations in suburban zones to the city center. The hotel lobbies are splendid, and the rooms have luxurious furnishing & quality linens. The in-room amenities often include LCD TVs, DVD players, computers, jacuzzi, video libraries, internet connection, iron board, & many more. These hotels generally have one or two multi-cuisine restaurants, one or two specialty restaurants, a 24-hour coffee shop, & a bar. One or two swimming pools are present. Room service is available 24 hours a day. One or two fitness centers are present. Valet services are available. Business centers and conference facilities are present. A concierge is also available to help you.
